On November 9, hundreds of girls from grades 3rd through 8th will cross the finish line at their “happy paces” at the Girls on the Run, Treasure Valley celebratory 5K.
The Girls on the Run program runs for eight weeks every spring and fall. During each session, elementary- and middle-school-age girls participate in evidence-based mental and emotional well-being programming and move their bodies twice a week. Since the goal is to instill mental and physical well-being, girls are encouraged to go at their happy pace—be it a walk, jog, or run. At the end of each season, girls from participating school programs from across the greater Treasure Valley complete a community-wide 5K together to mark their accomplishments.
Because Girls on the Run focuses on building early mental resilience and drawing connections between mental and physical health, they're natural partners for Community for Youth’s goal of moving youth mental health and well-being efforts upstream.
The Communities for Youth team encourages parents and youth interested in the program to get involved. Girls on the Run is still looking for youth and adult volunteers for the fall 5K to manage water stations, count laps, be running buddies, help with set up and break down, and more, but there are other ways to get involved. Volunteer as a program coach, start a team, enroll your child in a participating program at their school, or come out on November 9, to cheer on girls as they mark their accomplishment of completing a season.
